6-Traits Writing - Ideas Author Sheila Mullen
OPS Standards: Use the writing process (pre-write, write, revise/edit, rewrite, publish) to communicate.
Objectives: 1. Students will discuss visits from their relatives. 2. Students will write a first draft of story about a visit from their relatives, including what they did with them, where they visited from, how long they stayed, and how they felt about the visit. 3. Student will reread story to check for a good beginning, middle, and ending. 4. Student will proof the story for capitalization and punctuation. 5. Students will rewrite story with corrections made. 6. Students will illustrate their story and share with class.
Assessment: Student’s story will be assessed using the 6 traits rubric for ideas from second grade rubric. Provision for special needs: With students with special needs, the following interventions may be implemented:
Materials: book – The Relatives Came Writing paper Vocabulary: relatives, vacation, disappear, mountains, station wagon, pajamas Procedures: Springboard (Anticipatory Set) Introduce the book: The Relatives Came – while reading stop and discuss vocabulary in context of the story. Activities: T: Lead discussion about relatives visiting: What activities do you do with them? Do they travel far to visit? What kind of feelings do people have while visiting? Write ideas on chart paper for reference to during writing time. S: Students participate in discussion. T: Review writing criteria: beginning, middle, end, choosing a topic sentence, and reread as you go to make sure it makes sense. S: Students begin writing. T: Wander the room having students read parts of stories to you. Ask some questions and give encouragement. S: When finished writing reread story and begin proofing. T: Work with students for final rereading and proofing. S: Illustrate your story. Closure: Students share their stories by reading them or displaying them in class.
