Preface:

Using the guidelines set in article #1 “More Bang for the Book” by Konrad, Helf and Itoi select a piece of children/adolescent literature. This piece of literature will serve as the base for your unit. Write a justification for your book selection based on the criteria given within the article. (Use the bibliography given in class as a starting point for your book selection)

Include in your justification the disability featured in the book and the self-determination skills you are planning children to gain from the unit.

Unit make up:

Use the CSM lesson plan maker to create a unit based on this piece of literature. The full unit must have a minimum of 3 activities you could do to help children understand the disability and to help each child make gains in self-determination skills.  There should be a literacy base to the unit so you will have literacy goals associated with the unit. Assessments may also be around literacy goals as well as self-determination skills.

Midterm presentation:

This unit will serve as your midterm assessment. You will present the content of your unit to the class on Feb. 26 or 28th.  Please, have a copy of your book with you at the time of your presentation. You will have 8 minutes for your presentation.

A printed copy of your unit will be presented to Dr. Acklie at the time of your presentation. Dr. Acklie will also be presented a copy of the unit electronically.

A copy of your unit should be placed in your curriculum file as well as your CSM website.
