Discussion Board - for weekly journals

 

Student/Course Outcomes and Objectives:

  • Students will design lesson plans in their disciplines at appropriate grade levels.

  • Students will demonstrate professionalism and collegiality as future middle and secondary educators.

  • and grapple with theories unique to their experiences in the Middle and Secondary classroom.

  • Students will become familiar with the middle and secondary components that best meet the needs of our changing adolescents, through information, observation and participation in the education of Middle and Secondary students.

  • Students will have an awareness of skills of self-discipline, critical thinking, along with the appropriate developmental needs of Middle/Secondary students.

  • Students will observe, discuss and analyze their understanding and ability to apply knowledge to attain results in the classroom.

Discussion Board assignments to reflect on weekly experiences in the classroom in conjunction with the 40 Practicum hours. Ten journal entries are required.

Other Discussion Board Topics may include:

Teaching methods, learning styles, multiple intelligence, motivation, rubrics, cooperative learning strategies, classroom management techniques based on interventionist, non-interventionist and interactionalist approaches will be explored in order to develop a model of discipline which is eclectic, and will give more options when working with students on a day-to-day basis.

Session 1: Article assignment: due

Search Middle/Secondary articles, select one article that is relevant to your area of concentration; review, summarize and present the information to the class

Final - Mini lesson assignment:

Lesson plan/s for a mini lesson which will be taught in your Practicum school.  Develop a rubric/s for your teaching lesson, to be used at your Practicum school. Present the mini lesson: success and pitfalls. Reflect on your educational commitment and style.

Final Exam- Textbook

 

Assessment of Practicum, 40 hours= Students will complete a worksheet to update their Practicum in middle and/or secondary school experiences. Reflect on your educational commitment and style.

 

Requirements:

  1. Discussion Board - Reflective journaling (20% of final grade)

  2. Minimum of 10 DISCUSSION BOARD journal entries will be completed, one article, one mini lesson

  3. 40 hours of Practicum experience.

  4. Synthesize insights, questions and concerns that occur during your field experience.

  5.  Personal Assessment and Evaluation (5% of final grade) Reflection (12 font, double space) on your choice of Middle/Secondary education career and your ability to effectively discipline and direct students at this grade level.

  6. Practicum, 40 hours (50% of final grade) will be based on participation and completion of 40 hours, a short teacher evaluation from the Middle and/or Secondary school/s in which students did the majority of their Practicum service hours.

  7. Class attendance and participation, discussion, readings and use of technology are required (25% OF final grade) Students will have the responsibility of completing all requirements to attain a fair and optimal experience. If there should be any problem, Dr. Merryellen Schulz will make the final decision when necessary.
