Using Spreadsheets in
Thinking Science Lesson

analyze the data obtained by groups of pupils performing Activity 13

Use Spreadsheets
to Teach Mathematics and Meet Standards
Spreadsheet assignments offer concrete ways to explore abstract concepts
in mathematics and other subjects. Mathematical ideas are conveyed in several
different ways--using pictures, colored squares, and number lines. Counting on a
number line or a number chart, or using pictures to count in a pictograph helps
make the process of counting with numbers more meaningful.
Samples of some completed assignments are
included.

It can be on any topic you choose. Look at
example spreadsheet lessons.

- calculate
- display
understandable labels
- Format
the spreadsheet effectively:
- vary
background color

color to vary rows and columns
- Create an
appropriate graph of your spreadsheet
- Insert a
graphic
- Save
-

Ways to Upload your Spreadsheet
There are different ways that you can
upload your Spreadsheet.
Example 1: Save as Web Page -
This is how it looks - The advantage of this is anyone can open it.
1. Open Excel -
Choose the Save
As option - in the Save as Type text box choose as a web page. Excel creates two
items in this process a web page and a folder with the
same name. You will need both of these to make the web page work.
2. Open Expression - From the File Menu choose Import then File
3. You will
need to add both the HTM File and the Folder that has the same name as the HTM
file
4. Then on your web page create a link to the HTM file.
Example 2: Save
as PDF - This is how it looks - The advantage of this is anyone can
open it.
Same process as
above, only in Step one you save as a PDF file instead of a web page and this
process will only create one file.
You will import just the file in the same way in Expressions and then link to
it.
Example 3: Upload
the Excel file - This is how it looks
- This opens in Excel. If the person
who is viewing your website does not have Excel they cannot open your file.
However, you can also access the file and update it.
1. Open Expression -
From the File Menu choose Import then File
2. You will need to add just the
Excel File
3. Then on your web page create a linked to the Excel file.
Example 4: Copy
and Paste -
This is how it looks - Advantage of this is it is easy, but the disadvantage
is the formatting doesn't come in as well.
You will have to
select the elements separately. For example: first open excel and select the
table information then copy it. Now open your web page in Expression and paste
the table. Then do the same with the graph.
