The Honorable Mike Johanns Office of the Governor P.O. Box 94848 Lincoln, NE 68509-4848
Dear Governor Johanns, As you probably know, sexual abuse among children is still a big problem in Nebraska. The number of sexual abuse cases has declined in the last year, but many cases are also not reported throughout the year. Many children and even adults are scared to report a case of child sexual abuse for fear of reoccurrence of the abuse, or fear for their lives. A statistic from pcanebraska.org stated that 50% of child abuse cases go unreported each year. The reports may go down but that does not mean that the abuse is not occurring. I would like for you to consider a state law that would require education on the dangers of sexual abuse among children in schools throughout Nebraska. Perhaps getting curriculum in Nebraska’s schools to inform the children on how to report a case they know about or that has happened to them could be a possibility. Quite a few children are not aware that the sexual abuse that is happening to them is wrong. The Child Lures Prevention program is a program that teaches students how to be safe from sexual abuse, date rape, abduction, Internet crime, and drugs and violence in schools. These are all important issues for school age children. The program comes with lesson plans both for young children and older children. Thank you very much for you time commitment in reading this letter. I am very interested in educating kids on the safety of sexual abuse. With the sexual abuse education, there could be fewer kids afraid to speak out or get help for themselves or someone they know. Thank you also for the concern that you have for child abuse and neglect in Nebraska. As a future educator, I am committed to providing quality care and programs to children, as well as a sound educational foundation for a good start in school. Once again thank you for your time.
Sincerely, Katie Law Student of College of Saint Mary 1901 S. 72nd St. Omaha, NE 68124 Child Care Provider
