Title:  Grammar

NE STANDARDS:

8.2.1 By the end of eighth grade, students will write using Standard English (conventions) for sentence structure, usage, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling.

INTEGRATED DISCIPLINE: Reading, Social Studies

OBJECTIVES:

·        Students will be able to read a chapter of Indian in the Cupboard and pick out excerpts that contain incorrect grammar and punctuation.

·        Students will be able to write the excerpts the way they are in the book and then make them more complete on their paper.

·        Students will be able to explain why the excerpts are written like that in the Native American language.

 

ASSESSMENT:

·        Students will read a chapter of Indian in the Cupboard and pick out the excerpts that contain incorrect grammar and punctuation.

·        Students will write the excerpts like they are in the book, and then make them more complete on their paper.

·        Students will look at phrases from the Native American language and explain why the excerpts are written like that in the book.

 

 MATERIALS:

Indian in the Cupboard
Paper
Pencils
Pens
Native American language phrases

PROCEDURES

Anticipating Set:  Read a chapter from Indian in the Cupboard and pick out the excerpts and phrases that aren’t compliant with the grammar used by Americans in everyday language.

    Vocabulary:

Native Americans

Excerpts

 

    Activities:

     S: Read a chapter of Indian in the Cupboard

     S: Pick out the phrases or excerpts that aren’t written like they are in the English language.

     T: Discuss the Native American culture and why they speak the language they do. 

     S: Write the phrase as it is in the book.  Then write it the way it would be in the English language.

     T: Give students more Native American phrases and notice if they catch the differences in that language as compared to the English language.

    Provision for Sp. Needs:  I will help any students that need special help reading or writing.

CLOSURE:  This activity will give students background knowledge on Native Americans and they will notice the differences between the language and grammar from the two cultures.  They will know how to write the phrases or excerpts with correct grammar in the English language.
