Title: Magnet Hunt

 Grade: 5th

NE Standards:

8.2.1 By the end of eighth grade, students will develop the abilities needed to do scientific inquiry.

Objectives:

§       To recollect the information already taught.

§       To be able to apply what they have learned to the magnet hunt game.

 Assessment:

Observe the students and ask them to write what they thought about the game and discuss it in class.

 Materials:

Paper clips

Magnet wands

Computer

 Procedures:

 T: Explain what a graphic organizer is to the students.

 S: Explain what they remember learning thus far.

 T: Make a graphic organizer with suggestions from students.

 T: Explain the Magnet Hunt game to students.  Teacher will place paper clips throughout a designated space, and students must find the paper clips only using magnetic wand.

S: Go to designated spots and find as many paper clips as they can.

S: Go back inside.

Anticipatory Set:

Ask the students what they have learned so far.  Explain the game and how it is to be played.

Attract

Activities:

Discuss the graphic organizer and play “Magnet Hunt” game.

Provision for SP. Needs:

 Put students with a partner if they are unable to find the paper clips easily themselves.

Closure:

Ask the students why they think they are able to find the paper clips that were hidden in the grass using the magnetic wand.  Ask the students what else they could find using that magnetic wand. (metal detector).
