Title: Magnet Wars Authors: Josie Calamaio, Katie Law, Joselyn Mays Grade: 5th NE Standards: 8.2.1 By the end of eighth grade, students will develop the abilities needed to do scientific inquiry. 8.8.1 By the end of eight grade, students will develop an understanding of science as a human endeavor. Integrated Discipline: Decision Making Experiments Vocabulary Objectives: § Have students explain what a magnetic field is and be able to relate it to what we discussed in class. § List what an atom is made of. § Describe what an electric current is. Assessment: Ask questions about the lesson and have them do the activity and evaluate the activity sheets. Teachers will observe student comments and participation and evaluate what information was obtained over magnetic fields. Materials: Paper Iron filings 2 magnets activity sheet and pencil Procedures: T: Ask what the magnetosphere is. S: Answer what they think. T: Discuss magnetosphere. T: Ask what atoms are made of. S: They will tell us what they think. T: Talk about solar wind and the area above the Earth. T: Explain about magnetic fields and ask for questions. T: pass out activity sheets on the Magnet Wars. T: Have students play the game in pairs. S: They will record their answers on their activity sheets. Anticipatory Set: Discuss what the Magnetosphere of the Earth is. Vocabulary: Magnetosphere Atom Electrical current Magnetic field Solar wind Activities: Discuss what magnetic fields are, play the game and fill out the activity sheet on “Magnet Wars.” Provision for SP. Needs: Write on the board for hearing impaired children. Closure: Ask the students if they understand how magnetic fields work on Earth. Clean up iron filings and complete activity sheets.
