Title: Planning to Backpack through Europe

NE STANDARDS:

8.2.5 Students will describe the impact of life in Medieval Europe on later civilizations.

INTEGRATED DISCIPLINE: Technology

OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to point out Europe and gain knowledge of the countries in Europe.

Students will be able to learn to successfully fill out a passport to get a visa to go on a pretend trip.

Students will be able to list what they need on their backpacking trip to Europe.

ASSESSMENT:

Students will be able to locate where Europe is on the map on the bulletin board.

Students will be able to list what they are taking on their backpacking trip to Europe.

Students will be able to fill out a passport form correctly to get a visa to leave the United States.

Students will draw a picture of the country they want to visit the most.

MATERIALS:

Digital camera
Bulletin board
Passport forms
Markers
Paper

PROCEDURES

Anticipating Set:

Start off by taking digital pictures of all the girls and explain to them the unit we are going to be working on.  Have the girls see how excited we are about going on this trip. 

    Vocabulary:

Passport
Culture
Visa

    Activities:

T: We will take digital pictures of all the students.
T: We will ask them if they know how to go about leaving the United States.
S: They will answer and give us their ideas.
T: We will explain to them how to and give them the passport forms.
S: They will fill out the passport forms and turn them in.
T: We will explain to them that if their form is accepted then they can get a visa and will receive a passport book to draw the flags of each country we are visiting.
T: We will discuss what they need to take over to Europe when they pretend to go the next time we meet.
S: They will make lists on one side of their papers.
T: We will ask them what they think culture is and if there are different kinds of cultures in the world focusing on Europe.
S: They will answer us and we will talk about different cultures in Europe.
T: Finally we will ask them to look at the bulletin board and pick out a country that they would like to visit.
S: They will draw the picture and color it.

    Provision for Sp. Needs;

We will help any students that cannot write or draw. 

We will write on the board.

CLOSURE:

We will discuss everything that they have learned when time is up. We will conclude by telling them that we will be using the computers the next week when they come back to do an activity called Trippin’.

Reflection:

I wouldn’t change anything about this lesson because I felt it went very well.  It introduced the students to what the unit was going to be about and got them excited about it.  The digital pictures were a great idea, because it allowed the students to understand how to use the camera.
