 Title: Stereotyping (Journal Writing)

INTEGRATED DISCIPLINE: Reading/Lang. Arts

OBJECTIVES:

·        Students will be able to orally define the terms gender bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

bulletStudents will be able to identify the presence of gender bias, stereotypes, and discrimination within the song "Barbie Girl" through close analysis.
bulletStudents will be able compile a list of words/phrases that indicate the presence of gender bias, stereotypes, and discrimination found in the song, "Barbie Girl."
bulletStudents will be able to journal write about a situation in which they or someone they have known has been faced with discrimination, prejudice, or gender bias.

 

ASSESSMENT:

·        Students will orally define the terms gender bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.

·        Students will orally discuss the presence of gender bias through the song “Barbie Girl.”

·        Students will make a list of words or phrases from the song “Barbie Girl,” about gender bias or discrimination.

·        Students will journal write about a situation dealing with stereotyping, discrimination, or gender bias.

MATERIALS:

Journals
Writing Materials
song “Barbie Girl”

PROCEDURES:

Anticipating Set: Students will listen to the song “Barbie Girl” by Aqua.  They will listen for gender bias and what society sees as “Barbie features.”

    Vocabulary:

Discrimination
Prejudice
Gender Bias
Stereotyping

    Activities:

     T: Will play the song “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, and have the students listen for words or phrases that are gender bias, or discriminatory.

     S: Will listen to the song and discuss with teacher the terms that are mentioned above under vocabulary. 

     T: Will play the song again for students.

     S: Will write down any words/phrases they heard that are gender bias or discriminatory.

     S: Will take out their journals and write down a situation in which they or someone they have known has been in a situation of gender bias or discrimination.

      T: Will have a group discussion with the class if they choose to share what they wrote in their journals.

    Provision for Sp. Needs:  I will give any students who cannot hear the words to the song.

CLOSURE: This activity will help the students understand what gender bias, discrimination, prejudice, and stereotyping is at a deeper level.  They will share their own experiences and get a thorough understanding of the terms.  They will also discuss the gender bias in the world today, and what some examples are.
