Title: Stereotyping

INTEGRATED DISCIPLINE: Reading/Lang. Arts

OBJECTIVES:

·        Students will be able to write the difference between stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and scapegoating.

·        Students will be able to choose a correct solution for the little situations they will be given about harassment and prejudice.

ASSESSMENT:

·        Students will write the differences between stereotyping, prejudice, discrimination, and scapegoating on a piece of paper when the activity is completed.

·        Students will give a sensible answer to a situation from the sheet of situations attached to the lesson plan.  

MATERIALS:

Situation cards (Attached on sheet)
paper
pens
pencils

PROCEDURES:

Anticipating Set:  Discuss the terms mentioned above in objectives and assessments.  Establish their own personal definitions to each one of the terms.

    Vocabulary:

Stereotype
Prejudice
Assumptions
Discrimination
Scapegoating

    Activities:

         T: Ask what the terms mean to the students.

         S: Give personal answers about what the terms mean to each one of them.

         T: Put students into groups of 3 or 4 and give them a situation card.

         S: Read the card and think of a possible solution to what it says.

         S: Share with the rest of the class.

         T: Have students take out a piece of paper.

         S: Write all the terms out and correctly define them.

    Provision for Sp. Needs:  I will help any students who cannot read or write.

CLOSURE:  After this activity, students will be able to correctly define the above mentioned terms and in any given situation give a sensible solution on how to deal with discrimination or acts of prejudice.
