“Why Teach?”

I often ask myself this question as I work towards my teaching degree.  What does it mean to teach?  Do I really want to go to school everyday to teach?  I think about it and I am reminded that teaching is the most rewarding profession.  I can’t think of any other job that I would go to and feel that I actually made a difference in just one person’s life.  I chose to become a teacher because of the impact that I will someday make on my students and the opportunity to instill in my students, morals and a work ethic that will benefit them later in their lives.

The most important job of a teacher is to put the students first.  After all, that is why teachers have the jobs they do.  Many students may not receive attention, help, or love at home.  My job as a teacher is to make sure they feel safe, welcome, and good about themselves from the moment they walk through that door until they leave in the afternoon.  If I can make a difference in just one student’s life then becoming a teacher was worth.

I believe most students enjoy coming to school to learn, but I also know that some go because they have to. I want every child in my classroom to want to come to school to learn.  I want to make learning fun for all of my students.  Many students don’t like school because they may not learn well or like the way the teacher teaches.  I want to make accommodations for all of my students so they know that school doesn’t have to be impossible.
