Title: Words and their Meanings

Grade: 1st

NE STANDARDS:

1.1.1    By the end of first grade, students will read and write using a variety of word recognition strategies at grade one level.

1.1.3    By the end of first grade, students will demonstrate knowledge of the organization of print when reading and writing.

1.2.1 By the end of first grade, students will speak in clear, complete,
         coherent sentences using Standard English.

INTEGRATED DISCIPLINE: Reading, Spelling

OBJECTIVES:

·        Students will be able to correctly put sentences in order, from the book Arthur’s Underwear by Marc Brown, so they make sense.

·        Students will be able to show they understand the meanings of words they have learned.

·        Students will be able to write their own sentences with specific words given to them.

ASSESSMENT:

·        Students will write sentences in their notebooks, from the book Arthur’s Underwear by Marc Brown, in the order they are supposed to be.

·        Students will raise their hands and tell me the meaning of the word that is being focused on.

·        Students will write their own sentences in their notebooks with specific words given to them.

Notebooks

Arthur’s Underwear by Marc Brown

 

PROCEDURES:

Anticipating Set: Read the book Arthur’s Underwear by Marc Brown.  Ask class what words they don’t know.  Go over the words and discuss their meanings.

    Activities:

    T: Will read the book Arthur’s Underwear by Marc Brown. Ask the students what words, if any, they didn’t know some of the words and what they mean.

    S: Will listen to the story and ask about any words they don’t know the meanings of.

    T: Answer their questions by showing how to look up words in the dictionary.

    T: Will ask what some words mean.

    S: Will tell what the words mean that the teacher asks.

    T: Will discuss the parts of a sentence and show examples from the book.

    T: Will put the sentence on the board scrambled.

    S:  Will take out their notebooks and write the way the sentence should be.

     T: Will ask why they put the words in that order and what the sentence means.

     S: Will tell the teacher what it means and correct their sentence in their notebook if they got it wrong.

    Provision for Sp. Needs:  I will help any students that cannot see or hear by making accommodations.  Will help any students who cannot write.

CLOSURE:  Students will know the sentence structure and what the words mean in the sentence.  They will eventually move outside of books and as I make up sentences, they write them unscrambled in their notebooks.
