The Election Process

NE Standards:

4.13 Students will describe the process of making laws, carrying out laws, and determining if
laws have been violated.

Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. Students:

a. plan strategies to guide inquiry.
b. locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media.
c. evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks.
d. process data and report results.

Objectives:

·         Students will be able to:

·         Identify local, county, and state representatives.

·         Explain the election process along with the Electoral College process.

·         Explain the process of contacting a representative.

Assessment:

A Rubric will be utilized to assess student’s participation within the group and class; Students will also be assessed on their group’s ability to find the things on the list along with their list of sources.
Students peer assessments will also be a factor for the overall grade given.

Computers with internet access
Pens/Pencils

Procedures

Anticipatory Set:

Begin the class by asking the students how the President of the United States is elected. Lead a short class discussion, asking them their opinions regarding the election process.

Learning Activities

Teacher:

Introduce the structure of local government, the election process for local, state, and the presidential election.

Students:

Students will be placed in assigned groups.
Students will be completing a WebQuest: Election Scavenger Hunt.
Students will be searching for requested information using online resources for a list of election-related news, photos, editorials, and more for the election-related "treasures."
Students will also need to keep track of their sources.
After completing the WebQuest, each group will discuss a component of the election process.

Provision for special needs:

Provisions will be made based on student's need.

Closure:

Think-Pair-Share

With students seated in teams of 4, have them number them from 1 to 4.
Give students at least 10 seconds of think time to THINK of their own answer
Ask students to PAIR with their partner to discuss the topic or solution.
Finally, randomly call on a few students to SHARE their ideas with the class.

Reflections will be given after completed lesson to provide an accurate reflection.
