The Giver Lesson Plans

Integrated disciplines: Young Adult Literature

NE Standards:

8.1.1 By the end of the eighth grade, students will identify the main idea and supporting details in what they have read.

8.1.2 By the end of the eighth grade, students will identify, locate, and use multiple resources to access information on an assigned or self-selected topic.

8.1.6 By the end of the eighth grade, students will identify similarities and differences across a variety of eighth grade reading selections.

8.2.5 By the end of the eighth grade, students will demonstrate the ability to use self-generated questions, note taking, summarizing and outlining while learning.

8.3.1 By the end of the eighth grade, students will participate in group discussions by asking questions and contributing information and ideas.

8.3.2 By the end of the eighth grade, students will use multiple presentation styles for specific audiences and purposes.

8.4.1 By the end of the eighth grade, students will identify information gained and complete tasks through listening.

 Objectives:  Must be measurable!

v  The students will listen to provided songs and read provided lyrics.

v  The students choose from one of the songs and explain why the song and lyrics coincide with the book “The Giver”.

v  The students will independently create a time line of events in the “The Giver”.

v  The students will break into small groups and discuss their assignments.

Assessment: Must measure objectives!

v  The students will choose song after listening to the examples provided and write an explanation of why they chose that particular song and why it represents “The Giver”.

v  The students will create a time line of events in the book. It must have at least 6 major events displayed in a linear timeline.

v  The students will break into small groups and discuss their song choice and timeline

v  The Students will write one sentence about what they remember from each person’s assignment within their group.

 

Materials: Paper for time line, cd’s and cd player, markers and writing utensils for timeline and writing assignment, and paper for writing.

 

Procedures

 

Anticipatory Set

The teacher will play on of the songs he/she brought to class that represents the giver. The teacher will ask open ended questions about how that song may represent the, and brainstorm ideas on the whiteboard.

Learning Activities

 

Teacher:    What the teacher will do.

v  The teacher will write on whiteboard, responses to students brainstorming.

v  The teacher will talk about how differences in answers and how students may interpret things differently based on personal experiences and how we need to respect each others opinion.

v  The teacher will pass out lyrics to 4 chosen songs and will play them to the class. The class will listen and read the lyrics of the song.

v  The teacher will pass out large paper for students to create a timeline on.

Students:    What the students will do.

v  The students will listen to the songs and read the lyrics.

v  The students will write a paragraph of why they chose the song that they did and why it represents “The Giver” to them.

v  The students will create a time line of at least 6 events in the book.  

v  The students will break into their assigned small groups and discuss assignments.

v  The students will present their research to the class.

v  The students will write one sentence about what they learned from each person in their group.

v  The students will self evaluate their work and the work of the other students in their group anonymously.

Provision for special needs:                                                                  

Remedial Activities: The students will write one sentence about why they chose the song they did. The students will create a timeline with at least 3 events in the book

Enrichment Activities: The student will research other songs that they think would represent the book. The students will illustrate their timeline. 

 

Closure: Students can share their work with the rest of the class.

Reflection:  Possibly use the research from the enrichment for future classes.
