Social Studies:
8.2.6 By the end of eighth grade, students will describe the impact of selected civilizations in Asia and Africa on the development of later cultures.
8.4.2 By the end of eighth grade, students will demonstrate skills for historical analysis.
8.4.3 By the end of eighth grade, students will develop skills in discussion, debate, and persuasive writing by analyzing historical situations and events.
8.4.6 By the end of eighth grade, students will improve their skills in historical research and geographical analysis.

Reading/Writing:

8.1.1 By the end of the eighth grade, students will identify the main idea and supporting details in what they have read.
8.1.2 By the end of the eighth grade, students will identify, locate, and use multiple resources to access information on an assigned or self-selected topic.

ISTE Standards:


Standard 1. Knows the characteristics and uses of computer hardware and operating systems
--Connects via modem to other computer users via the internet, an on-line service, or bulletin board system


Standard 2. Knows the characteristics and uses of computer software programs
--Uses advanced features and utilities of word processors (e.g., uses clip art, a spell-checker, grammar checker, thesaurus, outliner)
--Knows the common features and uses of desktop publishing software (e.g., documents are created, designed, and formatted for publication; data, graphics, and scanned images can be imported into a document using desktop software)

Objectives:

Students will be able to:
1. Complete the WebQuest
2. Work cooperatively with group members

3. Assess the impact of geography on the development of Japan.

 

Assessment:

  • Participation in class discussion will be part of overall class participation grade

  • Web Quest will be graded by this Rubric

Materials:

1. Copy of the social studies textbook
2. Copy of world atlas (available in class library)
3. Writing materials
4. Computers with word processing and internet access

 

Procedures

 

Anticipatory Set:

  • Display a map of Japan in class.

  • Conduct a "fly through" using Google Earth to show where Japan is located in relation to Nebraska.

Learning Activities

 

Teacher:

1. Assign groups
2. Assign roles in groups

3. Assess student learning

 

Students:

1. Complete assigned individual research.

2. Complete group analysis in support of the WebQuest instructions.

 

Provision for special needs:

  • Clear, concise instructions

  • Use of visuals

  • Modeling of expectations

  • Repeating of instructions

  • Incorporation of all the senses

  • Other modifications as needed by IEP in consultation with the special education teacher

Closure:

Have each group share their favorite "fact" about Japan's geography and favorite web site.
