LESSON PLAN TOPIC: Listening         TITLE: Lego Buildings

AUTHOR: Cathy Brown

GRADE: 9-12                                    Integrated Discipline(s): Reading/Writing and Mathematics

NE STANDARDS

8.4 LISTENING

8.4.1 By the end of the eighth grade, students will identify information gained and complete tasks through listening.

12.3 SPEAKING

12.3.1 By the end of the twelfth grade, students will participate in student directed discussions by eliciting questions and responses.

12.4 GEOMETRY/SPATIAL CONCEPT

12.4.2 By the end of twelfth grade, students will create geometric models to describe the physical world.

12.4.3 By the end of twelfth grade, students will evaluate characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will be able to complete LEGO "buildings" by listening to directions.

2. Students will be able to identify the geometric shapes created in the buildings.

ASSESSMENT (formative and summative)

Participation in class discussion will be part of overall class participation grade. How well the structures are duplicated will give insight into the ability of the students to communicate effectively

MATERIALS:

  • baggies of LEGO pieces---each team must have identical pieces in their bags

PROCEDURES: Students team up with a partner. They set up their work area so they are sitting back to back and cannot see each other's work space. Each partner gets a bag of lego pieces (both partners have the identical pieces). They take turns building a structure and giving directions to their partners to build the identical structure. Compare and discuss. Do the activity at least twice per person

    Anticipatory Set

One of the most important skills in this class will be listening to instructions and asking questions when you do not understand the topics. This exercise will help with those skills and give us an opportunity to meet your classmates….

    Vocabulary

    None--

    Activities

1. Give each team materials.

2. Position the teams so they cannot see each other's work space---back to back works well.

3. One member builds a structure from his pieces.

4. He then gives the partner oral instructions on how to duplicate his structure.

5. Neither may look at each other's work until the end of the exercise.

6. The person building cannot ask questions---just must follow directions.

7. Compare structures and then switch roles.

8. Discuss the problems that came up and how to solve them.

Provision for special needs:

  • Clear, concise instructions

  • Use of visuals (perhaps flat puzzles or larger LEGOs)

  • Modeling of expectations

  • Repeating of instructions

  • Incorporation of all the senses

  • Other modifications as needed by IEP in consultation with the special education teacher

CLOSURE:

We’ll see what you learned today as the class progresses for the rest of the year…
