I want to encourage students to learn by doing and interacting with each other.  I believe it will promote tolerance for others, teamwork, and social skills.  I also think as teachers we face a growing number of children who come from a difficult home life.  The three C’s idea appeals to me: to teach the curriculum (the three R’s) but to do it with care, concern, and connection.  Teaching this way involves creating a classroom of safety, security, and nurturance.

I believe using proper motivation, and positive reinforcement goes a long way in classroom management.  The Boys Town model and Discipline with Purpose are two behavior models that I really like.  Both of these emphasize discovering teachable moments.  I like the idea of recognizing when a students bad behavior is a time when they can be taught life skills and social skills.  Social skills are a huge part of adulthood, knowing how to act, what to say and what is appropriate at different times are skills that students will use throughout their lives.

I think all children can be helped to achieve their full potential as I give them the knowledge that I have and work to inspire and motivate them in the classroom.  I want the students to know they can have fun with learning.  I plan to use learning strategies like quick writes, KWL, graffiti boards, and think/share/pair to get students involved in the subject matter.  I want to incorporate lessons plans that tie in both right brain and left brain activities to get help reach all of the students.
