Title: Tangram Bean Bag Toss Author: Emily Nielsen and Heather Yarborough Grade: 5 Integrated Discipline: Math NE Standards: NE Math Standards: 8.4.3 By the end of eighth grade, students will use formulas to solve problems involving perimeter and are of a square, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles, as well as the area and circumference of circles. 8.4.3 By the end of eighth grade, students will apply transformations to two and three dimensional geometric figures. Objectives: Students will take turns tossing a bean bag onto the pieces of a tangram. Students will construct a specific figure using the tangrams pieces. Assessment: Watch students for accuracy when constructing the tangram. Provisions for Special Needs: If a student needs help constructing the object from the tangram assistance will be given. Materials: Tangram set for each student Bean bags Large pieces of the tangram set spread out Procedures: Anticipatory Set: Tell students we are going to play a game today using tangrams. Activities: Hand out to each student a different figure they must construct out of the tangrams. Explain to the students the rules of the game. -You must stand behind a designated chair. -You have one chance to toss the bean bag on one of the tangram pieces. -You must collect all tangram pieces to construct your tangram figure. -The first person to collect all the tangram pieces and construct their figure wins. Closure: Have all the students construct their tangram figure. Reflection: The students for the most part seemed to enjoy playing this game. We had one student who did not do as well as they would have liked to toss the bean bag on the pieces. This person got really down on themselves. If we could do this all over again we would have probably discussed the importance of it not mattering whether you win or lose, instead we were just having fun. The other students did not get down on themselves when they did not collect their pieces. |
