Title: Community Poetry Author: Emily Nielsen Pronged Focus: Social Studies and Literature Student Objectives: What is a poem? What are some features that make up a community? How would you describe where you live? Introduction: Review with the students what they have learned about their community. Encourage them to discuss the features, people, and their roles in the community. Development: - As a culmination to this unit, tell the students they are going to write poems about their community. Read the poems from the attached Web resource to show and give students some background of poetry. Have students listen to the poems for ideas, for real and make-believe poems, and for the main idea of the poems.
- Title:
Songs and Poems - Write "acrostic" on the board. Ask the students if they know what it means. Explain that an acrostic poem takes a word, sentence, or phrase and makes the first letter of each the first line of a poem. - Have the students brainstorm a list of words that describe or name features in their community such as fireman, doctor, nurse, dentist, police officer, helper, house, etc. Write the words on the board. Choose one word and create an acrostic poem as a class. Erase the word so students will not choose that word. - Give students a piece of paper to write their poem. Depending on the ability of the students, the teacher may want to pair the students. After the poems are completed, have the students illustrate their poem Conclusion: Have students share their poem with the class. Assessment: Collect the students’ poems.
