Title: Comprehension for the book Trick or Treat Little Critter by Mercer Mayer Author: Emily Nielsen Grade Level: Kindergarten Integrated Disciplines: Reading and Comprehension NE Standards: 1.1.4—By the end of first grade, students will read and demonstrate comprehension at grade one level, using a variety of strategies. Objectives: Students will make a logical guess on what they believe is going to happen in the story based on only seeing the cover of the book and knowing the title and author of the book, and after the book is read they will state if their assumptions were correct or not and why. Assessment: Are the students’ making the connection between guessing what a story means by the cover of the book and knowing the title and author, and what the book is actually about. Were the students’ guesses about the book correct with what the book was actually about? Materials: The book Trick or Treat Little Critter by Mercer Mayer. Procedures: Anticipatory Set: Introduce the students to the book Trick or Treat Little Critter by Mercer Mayer by reading the students the title of the book and the author of the book. Learning Activities: Ask the students to come up with ideas of what the book may be about based on seeing the cover of the book and knowing the title and author of the book. Discuss as a class all of the possible ideas the book may be about. Read the book to the students. Provisions for Special Needs: All students should be able to participate in this activity. Students will be sitting on the floor in front of the teacher who is in a rocking chair reading the story. If a child is unable to sit on the floor they may sit in a chair. If the child likes to touch others or can not sit still have them sit by the teacher. Closure: Have the students’ take turns telling the class if what they thought was going to happen in the book actually happened. If they were not the same why did they think something else was going to happen in the book? Have the student explain their answer.
