Title: Identifying Items that Start with the Letter N (This lesson could be used with any letter of the alphabet.) Author: Emily Nielsen Grade Level: Kindergarten Integrated Disciplines: Reading and Phonics NE Standards: Objectives: Students will be able to identify items that start with the letter N. Assessment: Keep a tally sheet of how many items the student correctly identifies as starting with the letter N. Materials: A variety of items laid out on a table. I would start with ten items on the table, and you can always go up from there. Some of the items should start with the letter N, and some of the items should start with a different letter. For example, I might lay out a nest, napkin, net, nail (a play one of course), needle, newspaper, map, shoe, pencil, and eraser. Procedures: Anticipatory Set: Have the letter N written on the board for all the students to see. Ask the students to identify what the letter is. Then, have the students tell you what sound the letter N makes. Learning Activities: The teacher will have one student at a time go to the table where all of the items are laid out. (This activity could be done over a several day period, or it can all be done it one day.) The student will pick up each object and verbally say what it is. The student will then identify to the teacher if yes, it does start with an N or no, it does not start with an N. The student will do this with all of the objects on the table. Provisions for Special Needs: Some students made need assistance in knowing what an object is, so assistance may need to be given to students if they do not know what an object is. Also, some students may need assistance pronouncing what the object is, assistance may be given to do this. Closure: Go over all of the items as a class after everyone has completed the activity to make sure all students know which objects start with the letter N and which objects do not. |
