Title: Rope Jumping Author: Emily Nielsen Grade Level: 2nd or 3rd Grade. Integrated Disciplines: Physical Education NE Standards: Standard 1: Demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Standard 2: Demonstrate understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Standard 3: Participate regularly in physical activity. Objectives: Students will: -perform two-foot singles and doubles (forward and backward) with a short jump rope. Assessment: Teacher will: -check for accuracy in jumping each jump correctly. Materials: 1 short jump rope per child signal Procedures: Anticipatory Set (Warm-Up): Arrange the children in a scatter formation. 1. Describe the activity: I will tell you “high,” “low,” or “medium.” On “high” run high on tiptoe. On “low” run low with your body close to the ground. On “medium” run at an in-between level. I will change commands several times. 2. Have the children warm-up. 3. Have the children skip or gallop rather than run. Learning Activities: Guided Practice Two-Foot Singles: Arrange the children in scatter formation, each with a jump rope. 1. Describe and demonstrate the activity: To do two-foot singles, jump on both feet for each turn of the rope. Independent Practice: 1. Have the children practice two-foot singles, starting slowly, then going faster. Guided Practice Two-Foot Doubles: Keep the children in scatter formation, each with a jump rope. 1. Describe and demonstrate the activity: To do two-foot doubles, jump on both feet twice for each turn of the rope. The rope turns slower for two-foot doubles. Independent Practice: Have the children practice two-foot doubles. Guided Practice Basic Jump Backward: Keep the children in scatter formation, each with a jump rope. 1. Describe and demonstrate the activity: For this jump, throw the rope backward and jump rope backward and jump with both feet together as the rope hits the floor. This is a variation of two-foot single. Independent Practice: 1. Have the children practice the basic jump backwards. Guided Practice Helicopter: Keep the children in scatter formation, each with a jump rope. 1. Describe and demonstrate the activity: With both ends of the rope in one hand, swing the rope in a circle overhead. Make sure you keep a tight grip on the rope and watch out for your classmates. Independent Practice: 1. Have the children practice the helicopter. Provisions for Special Needs: If a child has jumping teacher may assist child. Teacher may also re-demonstrate to any child having difficulty. Closure: Divide the class into four groups, each child with a jump rope. Each group should have jumpers of all achievement levels. 1. Describe the activity: Each of you will choose a type of jump and on the signal jump as many times as possible without a miss. Jumps can be two-foot singles or doubles or basic backward jumps.
