Procedures:

Anticipatory Set (Warm-Up):

Arrange the children in a scatter formation.

1.      Describe the activity: I will tell you “high,” “low,” or “medium.”  On “high” run high on tiptoe.  On “low” run low with your body close to the ground.  On “medium” run at an in-between level.  I will change commands several times.

2.      Have the children warm-up.

3.      Have the children skip or gallop rather than run.

Learning Activities:

Guided Practice Two-Foot Singles:

Arrange the children in scatter formation, each with a jump rope.

1.  Describe and demonstrate the activity: To do two-foot singles, jump on both feet for each turn of the rope.

Independent Practice:

1.  Have the children practice two-foot singles, starting slowly, then going faster.

Guided Practice Two-Foot Doubles:

Keep the children in scatter formation, each with a jump rope.

1.  Describe and demonstrate the activity: To do two-foot doubles, jump on both feet twice for each turn of the rope.  The rope turns slower for two-foot doubles.

Independent Practice:

Have the children practice two-foot doubles.

Guided Practice Basic Jump Backward:

Keep the children in scatter formation, each with a jump rope.

1.  Describe and demonstrate the activity: For this jump, throw the rope backward and jump rope backward and jump with both feet together as the rope hits the floor.  This is a variation of two-foot single.

Independent Practice:

1.  Have the children practice the basic jump backwards.

Guided Practice Helicopter:

Keep the children in scatter formation, each with a jump rope.

1.  Describe and demonstrate the activity: With both ends of the rope in one hand, swing the rope in a circle overhead.  Make sure you keep a tight grip on the rope and watch out for your classmates.

Independent Practice:

1.  Have the children practice the helicopter.

Provisions for Special Needs:

If a child has jumping teacher may assist child.  Teacher may also re-demonstrate to any child having difficulty.

Closure:

Divide the class into four groups, each child with a jump rope.  Each group should have jumpers of all achievement levels.

1.  Describe the activity:  Each of you will choose a type of jump and on the signal jump as many times as possible without a miss.  Jumps can be two-foot singles or doubles or basic backward jumps.  I will time you for one-minute periods, and you must each count the number of misses during each session.
