Content Standard: 1: Identifying and demonstrating movement elements and skills in performing dance

Content Standard: 3: Understanding dance as a way to create and communicate meaning

Content Standard: 7: Making connections between dance and other disciplines

 National Writing Standards:

4.  Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language (e.g., conventions, style, vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes.

 Objectives:

Students will use dance in any way they see fit as a way of speaking out without using words to express content.

 Assessment:

-Collect the students’ written work. 

-Collect data as the students “move” or “dance” about.  Make sure they understand what is being asked of them.

- Make sure all students participate.

 Materials:

-1 large piece of poster board that has the word “Movement” written on it

-Board to write on

-Paper for students

-Pencils or Pens for students

 Procedures:

 Anticipatory Set:

-Ask students to sit in a circle

-Place the word "Movement" in the center of the circle

-Ask student the following questions

1. What is movement?
2. What do you think about when you see the word movement?
3. Can we communicate through movement?
4. What is so special about moving?
5. What would you do if you could not move or speak?
6. How would you communicate?
7. What kind of movement should you do if you were trying to talk to me and you were not allowed to speak?

Activities:

-Write the following on the board
When I think about movement,
I think about...

-Ask students to write a response to this question of a piece of paper.

-Write the following information on the board one at a time and allow students to do movement based on these topics

1.(Your favorite animal)
2. (An object of nature)
3. (An moment of silence)
4. (A moving object of monetary value)
5. (A thought)
6. (A moment of pain)

-Students should be able to tell what the other students are expressing through their movements.  No words should be spoken.

-Have students from do all six topics using movement.

Closure:

-Ask students to return to the circle for open discussion about movement.
