It's All Greek To Me

A Web Quest For 7^th Grade Social Studies

This web quest will take you on a journey to ancient Greece. You will explore a civilization that believed in Greek Mythology. During your exploration you will embark on 3 quests. The 3 quests you are exploring are:

· Gods and Goddess

· Greek Heroes

· The Trojan Horse

During each section, you will encounter guiding question to answer as a group. Groups of two or three and will navigate through suggested websites to find the information you seek on your quest. This information will provide a strong background and foundation for the readings in class. When this challenge has been met you will not only be a Greek Mythology expert, but also skilled in web research.

The Big Question: How is Greek Mythology different and similar to our religious and moral beliefs today?

The Task

On your epic quest you will learn and appreciate The Greek Civilization. As you explore the world of the ancient Greeks you will compile information to be presented via a project. Your project is to design a cereal box using a character or story from Ancient Greece. Instead of nutritional information you will give facts, descriptions, and art work describing the subject you choose.

Have fun and design your box with creativity. You can even put something inside that would better explain your Greek subject.

The Process

Students will participate in each of the 3 tasks below. The task is worth 10 points and information found during your research will be used on your cereal box project which is worth 50 points. Students may work independently or in small groups of no more than three. Each student in the group must write a response to the questions posed in each task. Responses may be typed or handwritten. After completing each task, students will have a good understanding of each topic, and will better appreciate the Greek Civilization. Here are the tasks: Answer the following questions using website below.

Task #1

Gods and Goddess

1. How was the world created, according to Greek Mythology?

2. Who were the Titans, and name at least 3?

3. Name and briefly describe (2-3 sentences) 6 major Greek Gods. Describe powers, personality, allies, etc.

Greek Heroes

Answer each question. All students in group must answer questions.

1. Name and explain at least 2 characteristics of a Greek Hero

2. Name 2 Greek Heroes and give 1-2 sentences describing the heroes.

The Trojan Horse

1. Who is Helen and why is she important to the beginnings of the Trojan War.

2. How was Helen lured away to Troy?

	Missed the Mark! 15 pts.	Getting Close! 30 pts.	Right On Target! 45 pts.	Bulls Eye!!! 50 pts.
Question Response:	May have incorrect information; needs to consult group or do more research. Did not finish cereal box project.	Has some of the answer correct or does not go into any depth in explaining response. Cereal box lacks adequate information.	Has the correct answer and does some explanation or the response. Cereal box is attractive and has lots of information.	Has the correct answer and thoroughly explains it. May go beyond requirement and do extra work (research more than is asked for). Cereal box is interesting, attractive, and is packed with information.

Conclusion

You have succeeded in exploring the world of the ancient Greeks and the world of the internet. You now have a better understanding of how the Greek civilization lived and a cool cereal box to show off. Congratulations on your hard work in conquering the quest of the Ancients Greeks!!!
