MATERIALS: White paper, construction paper, colored pencils. pen, paper. Sandwich supplies to be brought next day by students to share sandwiches.

PROCEDURES: This lesson is useful as a prewriting
Activity.  Sandwiches have likely been a dietary
mainstay of your students. Likewise, most of them have
some experience with eating in a restaurant.  This
lesson will ask students to design sandwiches for all
meals, courses, and occasions

Anticipatory Set Say to the class:  "Owning a
restaurant has been your lifelong dream -- which is
about to come true!  Realizing that your spot will have
to be special to survive amongst the competition, you
hit on an idea that will set your eatery apart -- JUST
SANDWICHES!  Regardless of the course, from appetizers
to desserts, each dish will be in sandwich form.  It's
time to begin dreaming up each tasty treat. . ."

Vocabulary Brainstorming, appetizers

Activities 1.  Given ten minutes, small groups of students will
    brainstorm sandwich creations.
2.  Each group will share their ideas with the
class.  Ideas will then be categorized.
3.  Students will collectively identify favorite
sandwiches.  Each group will develop a detailed,
illustrated menu entry for one of the favorite

    sandwiches

Provision for special needs: One on one with a paraprofessional, or smaller group. Prompting to get creative juices flowing. Use of alphabet key for non verbal students.

CLOSURE  Creative writing is like building a sandwich some of the core ingredients must be there must the details in between are where the fun begins. The ability to bounce ideas of other students allowed students think in different directions and build a sandwich with a broad range of ingredients just like working with someone for ideas in writing allows you to have a more interesting story. Students and teacher can bring ingredients for favorite sandwiches and share next Day.
