§

Anticipatory Set:
Do you enjoy writing poetry?
Have you ever finished someone’s sentence as they were speaking – or has
someone finished yours? Today we are
going to do both by using our vocabulary words to write a collaborative
poem.
Procedure:
§
Break students into groups of five
§
Pass out a sheet of paper to each student
§
Give each group of students five, 3”x5”
index cards with one vocabulary word on each
§
Individually, have students complete the K
section of the KWL by writing a short definition to each word
§
As a group, students will complete a
vocabulary sheet for each vocabulary word to develop a better understanding of
each word
§
Individually, students will complete the W
section of the KWL by writing the words they had incorrect definitions for,
along with the correct definition.
§
After each student has the correct
definition for all words, turn all five cards over, face down, on the desk.
§
Each student will select an index card
from the pile
§
Each student will write the first line of
a poem on their sheet of paper in front of them using the vocabulary word on
the card they selected.
§
After every student in the group is done
writing their first line, they pass their paper one person to the right
§
After reading the first line of the poem
on their paper, the student again uses the same vocabulary word in front of
them to write a second line to the poem passed to them, making sure the second
line relates to the first line
§
Again, the poem is passed one person to
the right. This process continues until
the original poem gets back to the original owner with five lines of a poem
completed
§
The original owner then adds a sixth line
to complete the poem, not having to use a vocabulary word
§
The students will silently read their
poem
§
Each student will assess their own poem
to determine if the vocabulary words were correctly used. If they are incorrectly used, they can write
that word under the L section of their KWL to demonstrate their knowledge
of the correct definition
Provision for Special Needs:
§
Student with handwriting difficulty will
use Alphasmart keyboard
§
Student with ADHD will be placed in
smaller group of 3 students (odd number in class) to help stay focused and on
task.
Closure:
§
Students will orally present their poem
to the class.
§
Discuss the process students used in
creating a poem with vocabulary words.
