Author: Melissa Baker, Amanda Bolen, and Kasey Sliva
Grade: 2nd Integrated Disciplines: Social Science, Art
State or National Standards: · NSS-G.K.-12.2 · NSS-G.K.-12.4
Objectives: Students will:
· Be able to define leaders in a community and why they are important to keep their communities running.
Assessment: · Students will present their community member to the class and evaluate each other’s performance by giving suggestions and asking questions.
Materials: · Construction paper (a variety of colors) · Glue · Craft items (buttons, pipe cleaners, glitter, etc.) · Lined paper · Pencils · Crayons or markers · Marker board and markers · Book: Tops and Bottoms, by Janet Stevens · Scissors
Procedures: Anticipatory Set: · The book Tops and Bottoms, by Janet Stevens will be read to the class. Students will be asked questions such as: Do you ever help out at home? What kinds of things do you do to help out? Does anyone else help out at home? What do they do?
Vocabulary: · Community Helpers · Roles Activities: · Students will discuss if they can think of anyone who helps out in the community. · The class will brainstorm who helps out if there is a fire and or a crime. · A of community leaders will be made. · Class will discuss how the community would be different without these helpers. · Class will get to create a community helper of their own. · Steps for making community helper: · Take a 12 x 18' piece of paper and fold it in half the long way (hot dog) · Cut a straight line from the corner on the open edge to the seam on the opposite, horizontal edge. · Take the left over pieces and cut them on the crease (if there is one), these two pieces can then be the arms and feet of the person by making an X on the back of the triangle person · Students can then decorate the person to be the community helper of their choice
Closure: · Students will present their community helper to the class and discuss why they think their helper is important to the community.
Provisions for Special Needs: · Students may work in partners or get help from the teacher
References: · Book, Tops and Bottoms, by Janet Stevens
Reflections: I think this lesson plan went well. The girls really enjoyed talking about how they helped out at home and it made it easy to transition to helpers in the community. The girls also enjoyed, as always, being creative and making their own community helpers.
