Word Choice
Author: Kasey Sliva Grade Level: 2nd Integrated Disciplines: Reading, Language Arts NE Standards: 4.1.2 By the end of the fourth grade, students will demonstrate the use of multiple strategies to increase their vocabulary. 4.3.1 By the end of the fourth grade, students will participate in group discussions by asking questions and contributing information and ideas. Objectives: • Students will discuss what word choice is. • Students will identify synonym for words. Assessment: • Students will be assessed on the completion of their worksheets. • Students will also be assessed on their participation in class. Materials: • dry erase board/chalk board • dry erase markers/chalk • pencil • Sheet of sentences • Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day Procedures: Anticipatory Set: • Teacher will read Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day to the class. • Teacher will talk about the cover. Ask if anyone knew what the words on the front meant. Teacher will have students brainstorm why anyone would use those words (terrible, horrible, no good) instead of just using the word bad. Learning Activities: • Teacher will explain what Word Choice is. Students will that word choice is important so the person that is reading can create a picture in their head of what they are reading. Using creative words can make your writing strong and interesting to read. • Teacher will talk about banning words such as good, bad, fun, etc. in class. • The word “Good” will be written on the board. • Students will list as many words as they can that could be used instead of the word good. • example: excellent • Students will then be given a worksheet with a list of sentences. • Students will need to find a new word (a synonym) to use instead of the underlined word. Provisions for Special Needs: • Students with special needs can receive help from their neighbor or can receive help from the teacher. Closure: • Students will take a pledge to ban these words in class and try to use strong, creative words to make their writing more exciting.
