Organization Author: Kasey Sliva Grade: 2nd Integrated Disciplines: reading, language arts, handwriting NE Standards: 4.1.6 By the end of the fourth grade, students will identify and apply knowledge of the structure, elements, and literary techniques to analyze fiction. 4.1.7 By the end of the fourth grade, students will identify and apply knowledge of the text structure and organizational elements to analyze nonfiction or informational text. Objectives: • Students will be able to correctly sequence pictures. • Students will be able to verbally explain comics in sequential order. • Students will be able to write a sentence describing each picture. Assessment: • Students will be assessed on their ability to correctly organize a story. Materials • A comic strip displaying a short story: One copy for each child. • Paper with writing lines. • Scissors • Glue • Pencil Procedure: Anticipatory Set: • Class will discuss about what it means for something to be organized and what it means to have organization in a your writing. Activities: • Teacher will have comic strips cut into pieces and mixed up for each student. • Students will sort through the pictures and determine what picture goes first, second, third, etc. • Students will glue pictures onto the paper in the correct order. • Students will verbally explain what is occurring in the pictures to a partner. • Students will write a story by writing one sentence about each picture. Provisions for Children with Special Needs: • Students with special needs may work with their partner while completing the activity. Closure: • Class will compare the order of their story in class discussion and discuss why they chose to put the story in the order they did. |
