Phonics

Grade: 2nd                              Integrated Disciplines: reading and language arts

NE Standards:

4.1.2 By the end of the fourth grade, students will demonstrate the use of multiple strategies to increase their vocabulary.

4.1.1 By the end of the fourth grade, students will demonstrate the use of multiple strategies in reading unfamiliar words and phrases.

Objectives:

  Students will b able to recall and spell words from the story using -ad, -op, -ish, -ink, and -ump.

  Students will be able to circle words with similar phonograms.

Assessment:

  Assessment will take place as students are circling words on the worksheet with the same phonograms as used in class.

Materials:

  One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss

  Chart Paper

  Markers

Procedure

   Anticipatory Set:

  Teacher will tell class they will be reading the book One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish by Dr. Seuss.  Class will discuss if anyone had read this book or any of Dr. Seuss’ books before.  Class will discuss that there are words in the book that rhyme and brainstorm what it means when words rhyme.  Class will be asked to listen for rhyming words in the book when the book is read to them. 

   Activities:

Teacher will have chart paper with -ad, -op, -ish, -ink, and -ump written on it.

Teacher will ask students to listen for words that end in the sounds on the chart paper while he/she reads the book.

The book is read to the class.

After the book is read, teacher asks students for words that end with the above sounds.

When students give a word teacher asks student to find word ending on the chart. 

Class will recall as many words as possible with teachers assistance when necessary.

   Provisions for Children with Special Needs:

Student may receive extra guidance or prompting while students are giving words.

Closure:

  Teacher will review list of words on chart paper.  Class will read words aloud and spell each.  Students will be given worksheet with words with the given phonogrms and asked to circle each ending in a different color.
