multiple resources to access information on an assigned or self-selected topic.
Objectives: Must be measurable!
Students will be able to:
* Students will research about Rosa Parks and be able to describe her
contributions and how they affect us today.
* Students will be able to identify important events occurring at this time in
history by participation in the KWL and historical perspective activities.
* Students will be review and be introduced to new vocabulary words.
* Students will be able to express their thoughts about Rosa Parks by writing an
essay.
* Students will review how to construct a timeline.
Assessment: Must measure objectives!
*Contributions to the class discussions relate to lecture and KWL wil be
assessed informally through observation. KWL is a way of assessing what the
children know, want to know, and learned.
* Students will demonstrate their understanding of the work of Rosa Parks in
their written essays. They will be assessed formally to assure that students use
quality writing.
* Student's timeline will be assessed formally.
* Students independent research will be assessed formally. These must be
relevant to the time period and shared orally.

Procedures
Anticipatory Set
Set up eight chairs in two columns like a bus. Have eight students sit in the
bus seats and tell them and the class that they have been working all day and
they are tired. They are riding the bus home on a half-hour trip. Tell them they
are the new passenger gettign on the bus. Role- play that you are getting on the
bus. Pick one student and tell him/her that they must get up and give you their
seat. If the student hesistates, say "You know the law, people with (red) shirts
must give up their seats if someone with a (blue) shirt comes on the bus. So get
up or I will have you arrested".
Learning Activities
Teacher: What the teacher will do.
The teacher will hold a discussion about what happened and the feelings of the
people involved. The teacher will ask the students what they know about the
Civil Rights and Rosa Parks. The teacher will record their responses on a
posterboard under the heading"K". Then ask the studetns what they want to learn,
and write their comments under the "W". The teacher will then hand them a
passage and direct them to read the passage and do the time line on their own.
The teacher will discuss important events of Rosa Park's life. The teacher will
discuss the guidelines for the essay assignment. The students will be given time
to work on the research for the essay.
Students: What the students will do.
Students will read a passage about Rosa Parks. They will create a timeline of
her life and the events that occurred in it. Students will have the background
information and appropriate resources to begin their assignments.
Provision for special needs:
Provide extra time and assistance if needed. Provide different levels of reading
material for those who may need it. For the hearing impaired students,
individual instructions will be given to that student.
Closure: A short activity to help students think about and reflect on
learning.
The teacher will have the students get into pairs and share their timelines with
each other and fill in any missing information.
Have the students put away their timelines. The teacher will draw a timeline on
the board and have the students go through it and recall all the things that
they can. Students can come up and write them on the board. After that is
completed alow the students to take out the passage and their timelines and see
if they forgot anything. Upon completion of the activities, the teacher will ask
the students what they have learned and this can be recorded to the posterboard
under "L". This closure activity allows students to direct and be involved in
their learning, giving them a sense of ownership.
