Circle time is a great social learning experience for toddlers.  Sing a song to transition them over.  Sung to the tune of 'This old man.'

"Circle time Circle time
It's a very special time
Let's go to the carpet and we'll have some fun
Circle time is for everyone."

Let each toddler pick out their own book while you prepare for circle time.  This will give them extra motivation to sit down with you.  If they try to get up too soon, gently hold their arm and bring them back to the group saying 'it's circle time friend.'  If they refuse to sit, you can let them sit in your lap.  Do not force a child to sit in circle time.  You will only make it a negative experience.

Pick fun and exciting songs which include actions and noises so the toddlers can join along.   You can sing a song about who is here today and tap each child on the head as you say their name.  This gives them a sense of belonging and helps to form a community atmosphere.  You may choose to read a story, but choose wisely.  You need to keep their attention.  You may pick a book for it's vivid pictures but simplify the story to make it go quicker.  Adding an attention getter is always helpful.  If you are  reading about frogs then bring a toy frog to the carpet and show them how he jumps.  Then let the toddlers stand up and jump like a frog.  End circle  time with a closing song so children know it's  time to put their books away and move on to the next activity.

Hi energy and positive feed back will ensure a great circle time.  Make sure circle time happens around the same time everyday.  Remember if you have a toddler who does not want to participate, they will eventually.  You just need to make it inviting and you may have to remove distractions like exciting toys.

Good Luck, and Have Fun!
