TREE FLASH

Topic: Environmental Awareness
Grade: Third

Learning Objective Children can practice identification and classification
                                of trees in Nebraska.

Materials needed:      One disposable camera for every small group.
                               The children’s journals
                               Tree identification cards from Lanahoa.

Preparation needed:  The children will take pictures of trees in their small
groups while on their field trips.  Their pictures need
to be developed and numbered prior to this activity.

Directions:                Have each group of children sit together in different spots
of the room.  Give each group their developed pictures from
their cameras, their journals and their Lanahoa identification
flyers.  Ask the children to share their field trip experiences
and to classify the photos they took of trees into the tree
type flyer from Lanahoa.  Tell them that they went on the
field trip as a group and now you want them to work together
                               in classifying their photos.

Special instructions to staff:   All you need to do is observe the groups, and help facilitate or direct conversation if needed.

Materials to use in introducing the activity:  These items are part of the overall environmental outlook and are included following this activity.

Source of idea: Self

Parent and community involvement

This will be attained through many fun and hands-on activities that I have chosen to broaden awareness of the environment to others.

Recycling Bins:  The class will start a weekly pick up and delivery of paper recycling bins that will be located in various places around the school.  Along with the bins a sign will be posted stating some interesting facts and statistics about trees and their endangerment that the students will find through searching the Internet.

Rainforest  Reptile Refuge:  This sponsorship form will be hung up in the room and sent home with the students to spark attention on how many different ways there are to contribute to the environment.

Human- I-Tees: This is a T-shirt fundraiser that is very popular with environmental clubs.  The children can involve their parents by selling these products to friends and family.

Conservation Trees for Nebraska:  With the money raised from the T-shirt fundraiser the children will get to decide as a class which tree/trees they would like to order form this foundation.  When the trees come in the class can check with the principal to find the best location on the school grounds to plant their tree together.
