Sensory experiences are very important in the lives of toddlers.  Not only do they help stimulate areas of the brain, they also keep the children engaged, and offer a great social interaction experience.

You need to be patient with messes when you work with toddlers.  They learn by making messes, and they have just as much fun if you let them help you clean up.  In this photo three tubs are placed on big beach towel.  Each tub is filled with soapy water and dishes.  Tell the children they get to clean the dishes and give them wash cloths.  They will love it!  Watch them closely to make sure they don't drink the water and don't .let them walk until the activity is cleaned up (they might slip).  This is a great indoor activity if it is stormy or too cold to go outside.

A sensory table can be part of your classroom and fun things can be added from day to day.  Make sure your sensory objects are safe for toddlers to explore, and make sure there is enough supervision to ensure safety.  The following is a list of possible sensory table items.

Cotton balls

Whip Cream

Cooked noodles

Shaving Cream

Jell-O

Pudding

Toy cars and shaving cream

Edible Play dough and cookie cutters

The list goes on and on.  Let the children have adequate time to explore in the table but you also need to ensure they are being safe by placing boundaries.  If they throw items out of the table remove them for one minute and let them try it again.  These are great activities to calm children down when they have had a rough day.

As a teacher or parent you may come to enjoy these activities as well.  They are very relaxing.
