MATH

1.       Transportation vehicles are made up of shapes.  There are rectangles in trucks,
          and triangles in airplanes.

2.       Wheels are in the shape of a circle.  There are many circles that are found all over.  We    even find circles in the foods we eat.

3.       There are wholes and parts to transportation items.  Airplanes use wings,
wheels are for cars, and feet are for people.

4.       Every piece of transportation has a way to travel.  Airplanes travel in the sky, cars
travel on the road, and trains travel on train tracks.

 Learning Objective:

Children will match parts and wholes and explore one to one correspondence.

Materials Needed:

Picture Book: Getting Around by Betsey Chessen

A toy car, airplane, bike, person, construction truck, and train.

If these are not all available in toys then you may substitute with a

            laminated picture.

Laminated pictures of a car tire, an airplane wing, bike handle bars, the legs of a

person, a part of construction equipment, and the wheels of a train.

It would be helpful to include small clear baskets for the children to place the

            toys in.

Advance Preparation Needed:

            Gather items

Place the laminated pictures of transportation parts around the table and include a

small basket near every picture.  The toys can be placed in a bin near the table.

Directions:

Read Betsy Chessen’s book Getting Around, to the children.  Ask them questions about transportation and how every item gets you to your destination.  Explain to the children how the items work, with wheels, wings ECT…  Tell them that you have all these transportation items and pictures of what makes them work.  Tell them that we’re going to match the pictures to the items.

Special Instructions to Staff:

Observation and Conversation with the children as they explore the activity.
