Introduction

As students we are challenged with more than homework, relationships and money.  Students have daily concerns such as were are my shoes? Where is my notebook? How am I going to fit all this in my locker?  Your job is to research and design an all weather, multi-purpose tote to fit in a variety of spaces such as locker, bus, car, under the bed.  This tote must be cost affective and durable, not to mention ergonomic (physically efficient). You will be researching this information on the World Wide Web.  By  gathering information you will be able to design and produce  a tote (on paper only).  At the end of the design your product will be copy righted and available for sale. This is where the possibility of making big money comes in.  Good luck  with your design  and remember me when you make your big bucks!

Think about the items you use and how they affect your health and  efficiency. How can you apply the "Tote Lesson" to other items in your daily life?

The Task

At the end of this task you will be able to design and copy right a multi-purpose tote to meet the needs of students.  You will be using the World Wide Web to find your information.

The Process

1. First you'll be assigned to a team of three students.

2.  Each student will research and answer two of the following questions.

3.  The questions are as follows:

     1.  What do you have to consider about the size of the tote?

     2.  How does carrying a backpack affect your health?    http://www.zillions.org/Features/Backpacks/backpack001.html

     3.  Look at other designs of backpacks and totes to identify features you might consider using in your design.  http://www.ebags.com

     4.  Explore materials and prices for your construction of the tote.  http://www.discountfabricsusa.com

     5.  Where and how would you copy right your product and is it necessary? http://www.copyright.gov/circs/cir1.html

     6.  Once you have successfully designed and copy righted your tote, where can you  find a job making totes?  http://www.idmag.coroflot.com/public/jobs_browse.asp

Once your group has gathered the answers, right a short paragraph for each question. Draw  a diagram of your tote on a poster board to be presented to the class.  Include your findings.

Evaluation

Each student will e evaluated by the following rubric. Your participation in research, application of design, final design on paper, and class presentation. Each student will be awarded an individual grade.
